. . . where the 1970s live forever!
The Cubs, getting early homers from Jose Cardenal and Andre Thornton, ended the Pirates' six-game winning streak, 9-4, as Steve Stone, with help from four relievers, beat Pittsburgh for the third time in five career decisions. Cardenal and Thornton hit solo shots in the first and second for a 2-2 tie, and the Cubs went ahead to stay with a three-run third, Jerry Morales doubling home two runs and Steve Swisher singling in a third.

Singles by Swisher, Rob Sperring, Dave LaRoche and Rick Monday, plus a balk by reliever Ramon Hernandez, accounted for three more Cub runs in the eighth. Chicago used four pitchers in the eighth, when the Bucs scored twice. LaRoche earned the save by fanning Richie Hebner and getting Al Oliver to ground out with the bases loaded. [The Sporting News]
