Bobby Grich scored the deciding run from third on a wild pitch in the 11th as the Orioles squeezed past the Brewers' Tom Murphy, 6-5. Milwaukee, which had tied the score on a pinch-grand slam by Darrell Porter in the bottom of the ninth, nearly pulled it out in the 11th, Paul Blair saving the game for the Orioles when he made a leaping catch of George Scott's long drive with the bases loaded and two out.

Baltimore enjoyed a 4-0 lead after six innings, aided by solo homers by Blair and Don Baylor. The Brewers scored their first run in the seventh, but Brooks Robinson's RBI double stretched the Oriole lead to 5-1 in the eighth. Mike Cuellar, two outs away from his 19th victory in the ninth, got into trouble when he loaded the bases on singles by Tim Johnson and Pedro Garcia and a walk to Don Money.
