The Cubs scored on a double by Don Kessinger and two infield outs in the first inning and made that run stand up for a 1-0 victory over the Giants. Jim Barr, who allowed only four hits in seven innings, was the loser. The Giants collected nine hits off Rick Reuschel, but twice failed to score after loading the bases. Reuschel struck out Chris Speier after three errors by Cubs' infielders filled the sacks in the first inning. In the eighth, after the Giants loaded the bases again, Reuschel got out of the jam when pinch-hitter Steve Ontiveros grounded into a forceout. [The Sporting News]
