John Curtis pitched a five-hitter and assured his victory with a two-run single in the sixth inning as the Cardinals defeated the Giants, 4-1. A single by Reggie Smith and triple by Bake McBride started the Cards' scoring in the first inning. Tim McCarver singled, Ted Simmons doubled and Mike Tyson hit a sacrifice fly for another run in the fourth before the Cardinals loaded the bases in the sixth on singles by McBride and Simmons and pass to Tyson to set the stage for Curtis' clinching single. The Giants' lone run off the lefthander was unearned on an error by Simmons in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
