For the second night in succession, the Cardinals rallied for two runs in the ninth inning, this time on a homer by Reggie Smith, to defeat the Giants, 5-3. Lynn McGlothen, who started for the Cardinals against Mike Caldwell, might have been the winner, but his error on a roller down the first base line by Tito Fuentes with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh inning allowed two unearned runs to score, putting the Giants ahead, 3-2.

The Cardinals pulled even in the eighth with singles by Ted Simmons and Ken Reitz and sacrifice fly by Danny Godby, who batted for McGlothen. Mike Garman, taking over for the Cardinals in the ninth, struck out the side, but the Giants were less fortunate in their choice of Randy Moffitt to replace Caldwell. Ted Sizemore singled and on Moffitt's next pitch Smith hit his homer. [The Sporting News]
