A walk to Tony Solaita, double by Fran Healy, two-run two-bagger by George Brett and run-scoring single by Frank White pinned the defeat on Reggie Cleveland. Carl Yastrzemski whacked a solo homer for the Red Sox in the fourth, and Boston made it a one-run game in the eighth on Tommy Harper's two-out single and stolen base, and a single by Rick Miller.
