Although tagged for 11 hits, Woodie Fryman turned in his first route-going performance of the season and pitched the Tigers to an 8-2 victory over the Royals. The Tigers grabbed the lead in the first inning when Mickey Stanley doubled and Bill Freehan homered. The Royals notched their pair in the third on a single by Kurt Bevacqua and inside-the-park homer by Cookie Rojas on a drive that eluded Marvin Lane in left field.

However, the Tigers' rookie outfielder more than made up for it, collecting four hits and driving in two runs. The Tigers broke the tie with two runs in the fourth with singles by Lane, Aurelio Rodriguez and Ed Brinkman and sacrifice fly by Stanley. Lane accounted for his two RBIs with a triple in the fifth and then scored for the second time in the game on a sacrifice fly by Rodriguez. [The Sporting News]
