Although Ron Reed had defeated the Cardinals only three times previously while losing 10 times, the Braves' righthander ignored his past performances and breezed to an 8-1 victory on a dole of seven singles. The Cardinals escaped a shutout with a run in the ninth on hits by Reggie Smith, Joe Torre and Ken Reitz. Ralph Garr and Marty Perez led the Braves at bat.
