Ken Brett, who set up the deciding run with a single, gained his 11th victory with the help of Dave Giusti when the Pirates defeated the Braves, 5-4. The Braves took a 2-0 lead before the Pirates erupted for four runs in the fourth inning. Richie Hebner and Richie Zisk singled and both crossed the plate on a double by Manny Sanguillen. After a single by Rennie Stennett, Sanguillen scored on a passed ball. Stennett took second and came home when Mario Mendoza singled.

Mendoza singled again in the seventh, raced to third on Brett's single and scored when Marty Perez muffed Ralph Garr's throw from the outfield. The run became earned when Lew Krausse, who was on the mound in relief of Phil Niekro, walked two batters before the inning ended. The Braves rapped Brett for two runs in the eighth on three singles and an infield out before Giusti took over and saved the game. [The Sporting News]
