Jim Northrup scored the tie-breaking run on an error in the ninth inning and Willie Horton added two runs with a bases-loaded single to clinch the Tigers' 4-1 victory over the Yankees. Singles by Bill Sudakis and Thurman Munson and a groundout by Fernando Gonzalez produced the Yankees' run in the second. Aurelio Rodriguez singled and Jerry Moses tripled for the tying tally in the sixth.

With one out in the ninth, Northrup walked and took third on a single by Ben Oglivie. Bill Freehan then grounded to third baseman Graig Nettles, whose throw home hit Northrup in the back as the Tiger baserunner slid across the place. Oglivie and Freehan each took an extra base on the error and, after an intentional pass to Rodriguez, Horton hit his single. [The Sporting News]
