After four days on the bench, Jerry Morales returned to the Cubs' lineup and batted in two runs with a homer and single to help beat the Pirates, 3-2. After the Pirates counted their initial tally on singles by Al Oliver, Manny Sanguillen and Rennie Stennett in the fourth inning, Morales tied the score with his homer in the Cubs' half.

The Cubs followed with two runs in the seventh. Don Kessinger singled, Rick Monday walked and Morales singled for one run before Jose Cardenal produced the deciding tally with a sacrifice fly. Willie Stargell brought the Pirates within one run with a homer in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
