Helping himself at bat with a single and double, Freisleben gained the victory with 7 2/3 innings of pitching as the Padres defeated the Cubs, 9-4. Freisleben batted in one run with his single in the second and scored after hitting a double in the fifth. The Padres expanded their lead to 7-1 with three runs in the sixth on a single by Johnny Grubb, triple by Derrel Thomas, two errors and a double steal by Rich Morales and Bobby Tolan before the Cubs hit two homers in the eighth to kayo Freisleben.

Bill Madlock rapped the first round-tripper and, after a pass to Rick Monday, Chris Ward followed with a homer, his first in the major leagues. The Padres insured their victory with two runs in the ninth on singles by Dave Roberts, Dave Winfield and Willie McCovey and infield out by Grubb. [The Sporting News]
