Doug Rau pitched 7 1/3 hitless innings, but Mike Marshall in relief picked up the victory for the Dodgers when Steve Garvey homered in the ninth to beat the Pirates, 3-2. A double by Joe Ferguson and single by Tom Paciorek gave the Dodgers one run in the second inning and they made it 2-0 with a homer by Ron Cey in the seventh.

Richie Zisk drew a walk from Rau in the eighth, moved to second on an infield out by Bob Robertson and scored when Richie Hebner singled for the Pirates' first hit. In the ninth, Al Oliver singled and Willie Stargell walked with one out before Marshall replaced Rau. Zisk then singled, driving in the tying run, but Marshall fanned Robertson and Hebner to end the inning. [The Sporting News]
