Getting a three-run start in the first inning, the Twins went on to defeat the Yankees, 5-2. Singles by Steve Braun, Tony Oliva and Jim Holt produced the first run before Steve Brye doubled to knock in two more. The Twins piled up a total of 16 hits but were able to add only two more tallies, one in the fourth on a safe bunt by Brye and singles by Randy Hundley and Rod Carew, and the other in the seventh when Holt singled for his second RBI of the game.

Four double plays helped stop the Yankees, who were held to six hits but drew seven walks. A triple by Jim Mason and single by Elliott Maddox produced the Yankees' first run in the fifth and their other score came when Lou Piniella walked with the bases loaded in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
