A misjudged fly ball that hit the wall for a double drove in two runs in the eighth inning and gave the Cubs a 5-3 victory over the Giants. Elias Sosa, coming in to relieve Tom Bradley, retired the first two batters before Jose Cardenal singled and Rick Monday walked. Jerry Morales then flied deep to left field, but Gary Thomasson turned the wrong way in his leap for the ball and it went over his outstretched glove, scoring Cardenal and Monday.

The Giants took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Billy Williams and Cardenal worked a double steal in the Cubs' half, Williams scoring, and the tying run followed in the fourth on a double by Williams, sacrifice by Cardenal and infield out by Monday. The Giants regained the lead in the sixth on singles by Dave Rader and Tito Fuentes around a sacrifice, but the Cubs pulled even again in their half when Don Kessinger walked, Cardenal singled and Monday grounded out.
