Bill Robinson homered with two men on base for the Phillies' only hit in the first inning when they scored four runs to defeat the Cardinals, 4-2. Dave Cash walked, Larry Bowa was safe on an error by Mike Tyson, and Mike Schmidt drew a pass to load the bases. Greg Luzinski hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Cash, before Robinson rapped his homer.

Lou Brock stole his 28th straight base to set up a run for the Cardinals in the third, but the speedster's string ended when he was gunned down by catcher Bob Boone in the fifth. The Cards loaded the bases on three walks in the seventh and scored on a sacrifice fly by Reggie Smith before Mac Scarce came in and saved the game for the Phillies by retiring Bake McBride on a fly.
