The Braves scored three runs in the fourth inning and made them stand up for a 3-2 victory over the Padres. Hank Aaron and Darrell Evans sparked the stanza with singles and Davey Johnson walked to load the bases. Frank Tepedino singled, scoring Aaron and Evans. Johnson reached third and counted what proved to be the deciding run on a sacrifice fly by Craig Robinson.

Dave Winfield homered for the Padres in the sixth. However, in the seventh, when the Padres succeeded in forcing the exit of Phil Niekro and loaded the bases with none out, Cito Gaston struck out and Winfield hit into a double play. Tom House, who saved the game for Niekro, allowed the Padres' second run with two out in the ninth on a double by Bobby Tolan and single by Derrel Thomas. [The Sporting News]
