Gary Matthews, who hit a three-run homer off Tom Seaver in the eighth inning to win the first game, 4-3, broke up a scoreless duel in the second game with a double in the ninth to lead the Giants to a 3-0 victory in a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Mets. Seaver yielded a homer by Steve Ontiveros in the fourth inning of the opener, but the Mets were ahead, 3-1, going into the eighth when Mike Phillips singled, Ontiveros walked and Matthews cracked his winning wallop.

In the nightcap, Ontiveros singled in the ninth, moved to second on a balk by George Stone and scored the game's first run on Matthews' double. After two out, an intentional pass to John Boccabella and infield hit by Jim Barr loaded the bases. Bobby Bonds then doubled, driving in two runs, to seal the Giants' sweep. [The Sporting News]
