In a unique ending that saw a relief pitcher come into the game and not face a single batter, Dick McAuliffe scored from second base on a wild pickoff throw to give the Red Sox a 6-5 victory over the Indians. McAuliffe drew a walk from Cecil Upshaw to open the 10th inning and when Bob Montgomery bunted, both runners were safe.

Milt Wilcox relieved and, before throwing a delivery to Cecil Cooper, who was batting, wheeled and tried to pick McAuliffe off second, but his throw went into center field and McAuliffe raced home with the winning run. The Red Sox were losing, 5-1, going into the ninth but rallied to tie the score with a walk, three singles, a forceout, a sacrifice fly and double by Rico Petrocelli. [The Sporting News]
