The Cubs pounced on Bob Gibson for four singles and three runs in the first inning and made them stand up for a 3-1 victory, only the fourth in the last 17 games for Chicago. The Cards also scored their only run in the first when Lou Brock walked, stole the 600th base of his career, and came home on Tim McCarver's single. Singles by Rick Monday, Billy Williams and Glenn Beckert, a walk to Jose Cardenal and an infield out produced all the runs for the Cubs, who cut St. Louis' Eastern Division lead to 1½ games. Rick Reuschel and Dave LaRoche combined on a six-hitter for the Cubs, Reuschel claiming the victory, his 11th. [The Sporting News] |
