A lineup switch by manager Red Schoendienst, who brought Lou Brock into the game in the seventh inning, paid off when the Cardinals won the nightcap of a twi-night doubleheader, 5-4, in 11 innings after losing the opener to the Phillies, 10-3. The Phillies, who were leading in the opener, 4-3, broke the game apart with four runs in the sixth inning. A double by Jose Pagan and singles by Cesar Tovar and Denny Doyle produced one run and Del Unser followed with a three-run homer. In the nightcap, Joe Torre hit two homers off Steve Carlton, accounting for the Cardinals' first three runs. When Schoendienst removed starter Rich Folkers in the seventh in favor of Diego Segui, he also put Brock in left field, batting him ninth. Brock then came up as the first batter in the eighth inning and hit a homer. The Phillies, who were within one out of defeat, got life to continue when Unser homered to tie the score in the ninth. However, in the 11th, Ted Simmons doubled and, after an intentional pass to Tim McCarver, Ted Sizemore sacrificed. Jose Cruz walked to load the bases and Brock hit a sacrifice fly for the winning run. [The Sporting News] |
