Fred Norman came within one out of pitching his third straight shutout for the Reds, but the lefthander had to settle for a 4-1 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader before the Dodgers came back to win the second game, 5-1. Norman's bid for another shutout was wrecked when Ron Cey homered for the Dodgers' run. Dan Driessen batted in two runs for the Reds with a single in the third. Joe Morgan homered in the eighth and Pete Rose knocked in a run with a single in the ninth.

Tommy John pitched the nightcap for the Dodgers and allowed only three hits. Ken McMullen, who had been out of action except for four pinch-hitting appearances since suffering a back injury April 10, returned to the Dodgers' lineup when Cey hurt his throwing arm and smashed a three-run homer.
