Although held to only six hits, the Cubs were able to defeat the Braves, 4-3. A wild pitch by Ron Schueler allowed Jose Cardenal to score what proved to be the deciding run in the sixth inning. With the Braves leading, 3-2, Glenn Beckert singled, took third on a single by Billy Williams and scored the tying run when Cardenal forced Williams. Ron Santo then grounded to Marty Perez, who threw the batter out at first, but Cardenal put on a burst of speed and reached third on the play, in position to score on Schueler's wild pitch.
