. . . where the 1970s live forever!
Ending his personal four-game losing streak, Steve Carlton pitched the Phillies to a 4-0 victory over the Padres. The southpaw's season mark now was 5-6, exactly matching his record last May 30 before he went on to win 22 of his last 26 decisions.

Carlton, who struck out 12, allowed four hits. Mike Caldwell was the loser, although yielding only three hits. The Phillies scored once in the seventh on a walk to Mike Schmidt and double by Bob Boone. Three other runs followed in the eighth. Mike Anderson began with a walk, Carlton sacrificed and Cesar Tovar was passed intentionally. Larry Bowa singled, scoring Anderson. Tovar took third and counted on a sacrifice fly by Willie Montanez. Bowa also crossed the plate when Caldwell was charged with an error on the throw from the outfield. [The Sporting News]
