After Fergie Jenkins beat Steve Carlton, 4-2, in the first game of a doubleheader, the Cubs completed the sweep with a 9-3 victory over the Phillies in the second game. Jenkins gave up a two-run homer by Greg Luzinski in the first inning, but then scattered six hits the rest of the way. The Cubs took advantage of two errors, one by Carlton, to go ahead with three runs in the fifth. Ron Santo walked, Carmen Fanzone was safe on a boot by Cesar Tovar and Carlton threw wildly on a bunt by Randy Hundley, allowing Santo to score. Don Kessinger singled to plate Fanzone. Hundley then scored as Jenkins grounded into a double play.

In the nightcap, Jose Cardenal drove in three runs for the Cubs with a homer and single. Rick Monday also homered, while Santo had four straight hits. Bob Boone homered for the Phillies. [The Sporting News]
