Bobby Bonds belted two homers and a single, driving in five runs, and Willie McCovey and Dave Kingman also hit for the circuit as the Giants defeated the Cardinals, 9-7. Giants' round-trippers accounted for the first five runs off Bob Gibson, who set a major league record by making his 242nd consecutive start.

After the Cardinals crept within 6-5, the Giants decided the game with three runs in the eighth inning. A single by Jim Howarth and two walks loaded the bases. Randy Moffitt forced Howarth at the plate, but Bonds singled to drive in two runs and Tito Fuentes added a tally with a double. [The Sporting News]
