The Giants won a fight-marred first game of a doubleheader, 11-9, in 12 innings and then completed the sweep with a 4-3 victory over the Cubs in the second game. The trouble in the lidlifter had its inception when Jim Barr, pitching for the Giants, plinked Ron Santo in the third inning after giving up a three-run homer to Joe Pepitone. When Barr came to bat in the fourth, Milt Pappas threw a pitch that zinged over his rival hurler's head. Both benches emptied and, in the confusion, Dave Rader, who was on first base, came around to score for the Giants.

After order was restored, Pappas hit Barr on the right elbow with his next pitch, setting off a general melee. The only casualty was coach Pete Reiser of the Cubs, who had to be carried off the field. The umpires ejected Barr, Pappas, manager Whitey Lockman of the Cubs and coach Hank Aguirre. Billy Williams and Randy Hundley also homered for the Cubs, while Gary Matthews and Dave Kingman connected for the Giants. Kingman drove in five runs with his homer and a single. In the 12th, Don Carrithers, batting with two out, singled and Bobby Bonds followed with the game-winning homer.

Chris Speier batted in two runs to lead the Giants to their victory in the nightcap. After the Giants took a 2-1 lead, Speier made it 3-1 with his triple in the fifth and then scored what proved to be the deciding run on a single by Kingman. Adrain Garrett hit a homer for the Cubs.
