The Red Sox scored four runs in the fifth inning and gained a 5-2 victory to split a doubleheader with the Indians, who won the first game, 8-7, on a grand-slam homer by designated hitter Ron Lolich in the ninth inning. In the lidlifter, Rico Petrocelli and Reggie Smith homered for the Red Sox, while Oscar Gamble and Jack Brohamer rapped round-trippers for the Indians before the Red Sox went ahead in the ninth, 7-4, on a walk to Doug Griffin, a sacrifice, double by Luis Aparicio and homer by Carl Yastrzemski. Leo Cardenas was safe on an error in the Indians' half, Tom Ragland singled and Chris Chambliss walked before Sonny Siebert took the mound for the Red Sox. Charlie Spikes struck out, but on Siebert's first pitch to Lolich, the rookie outfielder connected for his grand slam.
