Opening their home season before a crowd of 17,028, the Yankees were victimized by three of their former players, plus an ex-Mets' pitcher, and lost to the Indians, 3-1. Rusty Torres, John Ellis and Charlie Spikes, who were traded to the Indians during the winter, collected six hits among them. Brent Strom, whom the Indians obtained from the Mets, hurled the route and posted his first major league victory.

Torres doubled to drive in the Tribe's initial run in the third inning. A single by Chris Chambliss, error by Graig Nettles and single by Ellis broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth. Doubles by Leo Cardenas and Torres added the clinching marker in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
