Steve Blass, who was bidding for his 20th victory, was hit on the right elbow by a line drive in the first inning and left the game with the loss when the Mets defeated the Pirates, 7-3. A walk to Wayne Garrett, double by Tommie Agee, single by Ed Kranepool and infield out by Cleon Jones produced two runs before John Milner ripped a single off Blass' elbow for the third counter.

The Mets added their four other tallies off Bob Miller in the third on a walk to Kranepool, singles by Milner and Bill Sudakis and a homer by Ted Martinez, his first of the season. [The Sporting News]
