. . . where the 1970s live forever!
Steve Carlton became only the second pitcher in N. L. history to go over the 300 mark in strikeouts when the Phillles' ace lefthander defeated the Pirates, 2-1, for his 26th victory. Carlton struck out 11 to raise his total to 303. The only other senior circuit pitcher in that class was Sandy Koufax, who topped 300 in strikeouts in 1962, '63 and '66.

The Pirates' run off Carlton in the second inning was unearned. Willie Stargell reached second on a wild throw by Denny Doyle, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Manny Sanguillen. Carlton used his bat to help himself to victory. Don Money singled in the fifth and when Bob Moose threw late to second on a grounder by John Bateman, both runners were safe. Carlton doubled, driving in Money with the tying run, and Doyle singled to score Bateman with the winning run. [The Sporting News]
