Boog Powell homered after two walks in the first inning to enable Jim Palmer to gain his 20th victory as the Orioles defeated the Yankees, 3-1. Mel Stottlemyre passed Don Buford and Rich Coggins before being victimized by Powell's poke. Johnny Callison homered for the Yankees' run in the seventh.

After Callison's clout, Palmer showed signs of weakening, giving up singles by Bernie Allen and Thurman Munson, but Felipe Alou flied out to end the inning. However, when Horace Clarke singled with one away in the eighth, Grant Jackson relieved and held the Yankees hitless. [The Sporting News]
