Making his first start, Rich Hinton picked up his first victory in a New York uniform and Sparky Lyle received credit for his seventh save when the Yankees defeated the Indians, 4-2. The Yankees scored twice in the sixth inning on singles by Johnny Callison and Bobby Murcer, sacrifice fly by Roy White, an infield out and a single by Thurman Munson.

A walk to White, infield out, the second RBI single of the game by Munson, another single by Rich McKinney and double by Horace Clarke added the deciding pair in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
