Roberto Clemente, after going hitless in seven trips, clouted a homer in the 17th inning to give the Pirates a 4-3 victory over the Padres in the longest game in the N. L. this season. Before Clemente ended the four-hour, 12-minute game, the Pirates rallied three times, twice with homers, to avert defeat.

Their first comeback came in the ninth when a walk, a single by Jose Pagan and sacrifice fly by Gene Alley tied the score at 1-1. Ivan Murrell sent the Padres ahead again with a homer in the 13th, but Willie Stargell hit for the circuit in the Pirates' half. After the Padres took a 3-2 lead in the 16th on two singles and a wild pitch, Richie Hebner homered to forge a new deadlock. [The Sporting News]
