The Royals erupted for four runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Yankees. 4-1. Mike Kekich, who had been working on a three-hit shutout, was lifted after the Royals scored their first run on singles by Paul Schaal, Amos Otis and Chuck Harrison.

Gary Waslewski, in relief, was greeted with a safe bunt by Lou Piniella and then uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Otis to score. Bob Oliver, back in the Royals' lineup after being benched for six days because of a slump, followed with a two-run single to put the game out of the Yankees' reach. [The Sporting News]
