A loser in his first two starts, Bill Hands entered the winning column when the Cubs held off the Padres, 4-3. Joe Pepitone, who cracked four straight singles, drove in two runs in the first inning and Ron Santo singled to plate the Cubs' other pair in the third. After the Padres cut the Cubs' lead to one run, Hands tightened and pitched scoreless ball in the last three innings. [The Sporting News]
