. . . where the 1970s live forever!
The Pirates, who were held to two hits by Jerry Koosman and lost the opener of a doubleheader, 4-1, came back to beat the Mets in the nightcap, 9-5, in 10 innings. As a result of the split, the Pirates boosted their lead to two games over the Cubs in the East division race, while the Mets remained 3½ games in arrears.

Koosman retired the first 15 batters before Jose Pagan led off the sixth inning with a homer for the Pirates' run. The Mets scored once in the third when Tommie Agee was hit by a pitch, Wayne Garrett singled and Cleon Jones lofted a sacrifice fly. A walk, a double by Ken Boswell and single by Bud Harrelson added a pair in the fourth and Donn Clendenon wrapped up the Mets' victory with a homer in the eighth.

In the second game, the Pirates built up a 5-2 lead, but the Mets got a homer from Boswell in the sixth and tied the score in the seventh with a double by Jones, a walk and singles by Ron Swoboda and Harrelson. Willie Stargell shattered the tie with a homer in the 10th. Manny Sanguillen singled and was sacrificed to second. Dean Chance made his first appearance for the Mets and walked Dave Cash intentionally. Gene Alley tripled, driving in two runs, and scored himself on a squeeze bunt by Dave Giusti.
