The Cubs bombed Juan Marichal and three relievers for 16 hits, equaling their high for any game this season, and beat the Giants, 12-8. Jim Hickman led the Cubs' attack with two doubles and two singles. Marichal gave up 11 hits and was charged with eight runs before being lifted in the sixth inning. However, the Giants' veteran was the victim of sloppy support and four of the Cubs' runs were unearned.

After a double by Don Kessinger and single by Glenn Beckert kayoed Marichal, Frank Reberger relieved and uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Kessinger to score. Johnny Callison doubled to drive in Beckert, and Ron Santo then capped the inning with a homer. [The Sporting News]
