The Yankees fell behind in the sixth inning, 3-1, but got an immediate lift from Bobby Murcer, who homered with two men on base to beat the Red Sox, 4-3. Roy White also homered for the Yankees' initial run in the first.

The Red Sox, after being held hitless by Fritz Peterson over five frames, broke ahead in the sixth with their three runs on walk, three singles and an infield out. In the Yankees' half, Thurman Munson singled, White walked and Murcer turned the tide with his circuit clout. [The Sporting News]
