Premiere of a dramatic series starring Sam Waterston. American professor Quentin E. Deverill, currently teaching in England, finds himself involved in the mysterious disappearance of a brilliant young scientist whom authorities say has been lost at sea.

March 30, 1982: The Great Motor Race

With George Baker (Sir Harold Metcalfe), Manning Redwood (Henry Ford), Jeff Harding (Barney Oldfield), Tim Woodward (Harry Owsley), Gordon Rollings (Adcock), Jonathan Burn (Lecours), Eiji Kusuhara (Count Oyama). Deverill is alerted to an automobile race for which he lends his talents to one of the drivers, creating a rocket-powered car to enter the 300-mile event.

April 6, 1982: Infernal Device

With Ian Ogilvy (Lord Sarandon), George A. Cooper (Lord Eastleigh), Barrie Houghton (Kalnikov), Francine Morgan (Dolly), Eric Kent (Blake). Deverill is contracted to develop a safer detonation mechanism for mining. Meanwhile Jenny and Phipps are kidnapped at a soup kitchen as a way to pressure Deverill into using his invention for political purposes.

April 13, 1982: The 4:10 To Zurich
Season 1, episode 4

With Elizabeth Shepherd (Lady Potts), Paul Freeman (Professor Rep), Chris Jenkinson (Van Else), Paul Angelis (Kroll). After discovering a potent nerve agent, an associate of someone Deverill has been working with is shot on Deverill's doorstep. With his dying breath the man gives Deverill a clue about a train to Zurich.

April 20, 1982: To Catch A Ghost
Season 1, episode 5

With Cyril Luckham (Crabtree), Jean Anderson (Aunt Effie), John Vine (Gareth), Pauline Quirke (Jane), Shelagh McLeod (Caroline). Jenny leaves for a week to visit her sick aunt, where she learns of a potential ghost haunting the residence. She then enlists Deverill to investigate.

April 27, 1982: The Limehouse Connection
Season 1, episode 6

With Burt Kwouk (Dr. Lin), Derek Deadman (Wiggins), Sarah Lam (Priscilla), Mike Lewin (Insp. Draycot), Barry Dennen (Russell), Timothy Bateson (Alfie). A series of unexplained deaths among the Chinese workers in London leads Charlie and Deverill to investigate. The investigation becomes complicated when British and U.S. officials get involved.
